Tour overview
Visit Uplistsikhe – literally meaning,"the lord's fortress" - is an ancient rock-hewn town, located 10 kilometers east of the town of Gori, on the left bank of the river Mtkvari. It’s one of the oldest settlements in the Caucasus region, dating from the Early Iron Age, and contains the centuries of history and heritage of the Georgian people, including archeological and architectural monuments, oldest of which dates back to the early Bronze Age Kura-Araxes culture. But that’s not the only dignity of Uplistsikhe as the cave town covers an area of almost 40,000 square meters and offers you to explore large halls, pagan places of sacrifice, dwellings and functional buildings, like a pharmacy, a bakery, a prison, and even an amphitheater carved inside the rock and connected to each other by tunnels. You can also stroll around emergency escape tunnels and feel yourself what natives were feeling centuries ago while using them. At the top of the complex is a Christian stone basilica, dating from the 10th century. Today, the Uplistsikhe cave complex is the tentative list for inclusion into the UNESCO World Heritage.
