Briefly about Georgia
Georgians –
Yes, Georgians are very hospitable, you may already know this - We
love Guests and it’s the part of our culture to receive guest
decently and yes, we try to preserve our culture and keep our
traditions alive. But that’s not just all about culture and
traditions, it’s the result of who we are and what’s inside us. We
aren’t retreating from new approaches, trends or innovations, we
aren’t escaping from social challenges or different point of views.
We already knew about the equality of men and women and we had the
basis of parliamentary governance in 12th century. We had
one of the first Democratic republic in Europe,
where human rights and dignity were the fundamental principles of
the constitution. And today, as an individualism is rapidly
emerging out in the world, we are also pursuing to develop our
personal freedom and show the world who we are as individuals and
as a unity. Walk in the streets of Tbilisi and you will meet more
and more people with different looks, styles, interests and
personalities, who aren’t afraid to say no to what they disagree
with and confidently show what they want. That’s the most
interesting part of the uniqueness of Georgians – We can
mix and combine our two different sides and simultaneously carry on
our cultural legacy so well, that you may already heard about
Georgian culture and traditions, and try to develop and improve
ourselves and our society. Explore the Georgian people and see for
yourself how different, unique, exciting and interesting they can
be not just in the different parts of the country, but also in the
different districts of the city.
Landscape – Georgia is really a small country with
an area of 67,900km2. It’s one of the smallest country in
Europe. But, to say the truth, this is just an area… the
numbers that can’t really express what’s stretched on this
67,900km2 from the lowest point at an altitude of -2.3m to the
highest mountain Shkhara with the altitude of 5,201m. The truth is
that Georgia is the country of ten thousand wonders… almost. Here,
nature merges snowy mountain peaks, deeply blue seas, wild and
thick forests, green fields and valleys, steep cliffs and dry
deserts, on the top of that adds man-made layers of culturally rich
historical buildings and urban areas and pours over mild temperate
climate. Georgia is the land of the wild beauty and chromaticity of
the environment. It’s the masterpiece of nature… and it also can be
the masterpiece of nature in the palm of your hand.
Culture – Georgian culture is one of the most
fascinating parts of the country. Maybe it better describes who we
are and what we believe in. And it’s older than the first official
Kingdom of Georgia.
Georgians arose from the ancient Colchians and Iberians –
one of the well-developed civilizations from the ancient
times. Maybe, you’ve already heard about the legend of
Jason and Golden Fleece. Maybe, you’ve already
known that the word medicine is related to the daughter of king
Aeëtes of Colchis. But the roots of Georgian culture come from the
older ages than that legend at around 4,000 B.C. with Kura–Araxes
and then Trialeti cultures. But that’s not everything that makes
Georgian culture so impressive and exciting. We’ve already said
that our culture better describes who we are and here’s why – Every
part of Georgia is unique with its ‘exclusive’ culture and
traditions. Every Georgian subgroup like Kakhetians, Svans,
Mingrelians – they all have their own individual
characteristic traditions, traits, dialects, manners, architecture
etc. For ages, they perceived the world in a different ways and
expressed themselves and their belief in their own mysterious ways.
And did you know, that Svans were worshiping Serpent and believed
that it was the protector of home?
Today, Georgia keeps the great legacy developed for centuries and
welcomes everyone to explore this inexplicable world. Visit any
part of the country and you will see how unique they are and how
unique and magical are their microcosms around them... different
characteristics, different traditions and rituals, different
houses, different cuisines, different churches and monasteries,
different buildings, villages and cities… And do you know, what’s
more interesting? How well they can mix every these things into
one… One glorious Georgian Culture.
Music – who doesn’t love it, right? Sometimes
music is the main part of our everyday life. Sometimes we even live
with music. And music has always been beloved by Georgian people
too. They’ve been singing every time they could – while seeding or
harvesting crops, working, drinking, hunting and of course in
wartime while preparing for big battles. It’s always been an
inseparable part of our ‘Georgian Soul’. We are even joking that
everyone can sing here in Georgia.
Georgian folk songs are well known for their complexity and rich
traditions of vocal polyphony which dates back before the
introduction of Christianity in Georgia (beginning of 4th century).
It usually consists of background drones and several melodic lines
in the forth.
Here music also isn’t an exception with its diversity and
uniqueness. There are at least fifteen regional styles in Georgian
folk music that more generally can be divided into eastern and
western Georgian groups.
And have you ever heard about Chakrulo? If you’ve
imagined golden record floating in space right now, you definitely
know what we are talking about. Yes, Chakrulo is the kakhetian folk
song chosen to accompany Voyager 2 and with other 26 masterpieces
‘represent Earth in the infinite universe’.
But, the truth is that historical and cultural facts can’t really
show what really the Georgian folk song is. You have to listen
Chakrulo, Mravaljamier, Tsinskharo, Lile or any other song from our
rich musical culture to really see what we want so much to show
you… to dive deep into this uncharted ocean and feel what the
Georgian Soul really is.
Dance – Have you ever seen traditional
Georgian dance? If no, then you should definitely
see at least one dance even on YouTube. But if you have seen it,
how can you describe our most traditional perception of men and
women? Have you felt every emotion weaved into it? Did you like it?
I hope you did.
Georgian dances differ from each other with their own traits. Each
of them has unique history, style, costumes, emotions, feelings,
meaning and describes different events like wedding, war etc. But
usually they have one common – they show the grace, beauty and
elegance of Georgian woman and bravery, heroism, fearlessness and
respectfulness of Georgian man.
Some of the most popular dances are Kartuli, Khorumi,
Acharuli, Rachuli etc.
Museums – Would you believe anyone if they said
that there are few museums in Georgia? Georgia has one of the
glorious history and culture in the world. People have been living
here for almost 2 million years. There’ve been the first Europeans
walking here. There’ve been civilizations rising and falling here.
There’ve been Greeks and Romans visiting and invading here. There’s
been Silk Road passing here. There’ve been many
centuries of the rise and fall of Georgians too. There’ve been
friends. There’ve been enemies. There’s been Golden Age. There’ve
been Tamar, David and Vakhtang. There’s millenniums of history of
Georgia kept here inside the museums for anyone who wishes to take
this epic journey back in time and explore Georgia from eons ago
till today.
The most well-known museums are Simon Janashia museum in Tbilisi,
Museum in Mestia and Dadian museum in Zugdidi.
